Cumann Pheadair Naofa U16’s travelled to Dromore on Sunday morning to take on Tyrone champions Killeeshil in the semi-final of the Paul McGirr Ulster championship.
The Blues started the game very well and found an early lead through two Eoghan Byrne points. However a few shots dropping short allowed the Tyrone men to draw level. The Point started to make good on their impressive start with points from Ruairi Kernan and Eoin Carr. Ruairi McCormack and Aaran McBurney added more scores before Killeeshil started to find their feet and kick a two scores. Ruairí McCormack added another his third of the half to leave the half time score 0-8 to 0-4 to the blues.
Killeeshil came out with a new emphasis in the second half and score 1-3 without reply to get control of the game. The young Warrenpoint side didn’t panic however and kept the score board ticking over with points from Aaron McBurney, Eoghan Byrne and Ruairi McCormack to edge in front again. The Blues stretched the lead further after Cian McLoughlin work tirelessly to keep possession, slipped the ball to Eoghan Byrne who then set up Aaron McBurney to finish a great move in the bottom corner of the net.
The Blues defence held strong with Jamie Lynch and Man of the Match Kohree Hourican keeping Killeeshil at bay. Eoin Carr the scored three brilliant points in a row to push the Blues 5 ahead and Eoghan Byrne topped a great performance with two further points. With a score line of 1-17 to 1-10 with 5 to go the game looked over but Killeeshil hadn’t finished and threw everything at the Blues defence. A high ball in lead to a goal for Killeeshil and two further points put a kick of the ball between the teams. However the ‘Super Blues’ held strong with great block from Thomas O’Hare and strong tackling from Peter Sweeney seen the game out. Final score 1-17 to 2-12.
