The Under 16 team played host to Mayobridge in Milltown in their second match of the group stage of the South Down A championship, the outcome of the group matches determine which teams go straight into a semi-final and which teams have to progress via a quarter final route.
Mayobridge got off to the proverbial flyer straight from the throw in, scoring 6 unanswered points in the opening 15 minutes. They were very mobile and were playing in a very organised fashion and were fortunate in that the ‘Point boys seemed very much out of sorts. However the young blues started to work their way into the game – scoring the next 5 points, Mayobridge got one back from play and then on the stroke of half time they raised the green flag, making the half time score 1.07 to 0.05 in favour of Mayobridge.
Warrenpoint started the second half better, scoring the first two points and playing better than they had previously. The ‘bridge got one back from play and from the resulting kick out Warrenpoint managed a fluid movement of the ball the length of the pitch, with the last man taken down for a penalty. The spot kick was duly converted, leaving the scores at 1.09 to 1.07 in Mayobridges favour, with 6 minutes to go.
The final 2 scores of the game went the way of Warrenpoint, meaning the game ended in a draw, 1.09 a piece. Attention turns now to the final group game between Saval and Mayobridge, which will determine the onward championship route of all 3 teams.
