The first game after the split of the U14 leagues, saw Warrenpoint make the long trip to Saul earlier on Sunday morning (30th June). Having come out on top the last time the two sides met, the girls were full of confidence and perhaps a little complacency had sneaked in.
Saul started much the better and after squandering a couple of chances, got a point on the score board before the visitors. Warrenpoint hit straight back, with their first point, in the first ten minutes, which was proving to be very tight. Two rather sloppy goals for Saul put the Blues very much on back foot, as the weather conditions deteriorated towards the end of the first half. Warrenpoint kept at it and got a number of points from Cliodhna Martin, Sydney Barnett and Lauren Quinn, to go into the half time break trailing by a single point.
The young Blues started a little better in the second half, with the weather clearing and managed to get their noses in front, but Saul were far from finished. Another two fairly sloppy goals saw Saul retake the lead, which they were not to relinquish. Warrenpoint managed to get more points on the board through Lauren Breen, Lauren Quinn, Sydney Barnett and Cliodhna Martin, but just couldn’t claw back the deficit. Even with good late possession for half forwards Erin Carr and Athena Perdikomatas, some outstanding saves from Cara Bradley in goal and stern defending from Aimee Kelly and Lillie McClorey, the damage had been done earlier in the game, with Saul running out winners by 4-8 to 0-13.
The players and management would like to send their best wishes for a speedy recovery to Keelia Mulligan, who was injured in the warm-up and unable to play.
