On Saturday 12th May, Cumann Pheadair Naofa U14 players Enya Quinn, Katie Howlett and Caoimhe Quinn headed to Portlaoise as part of the Down U14 squad to take part in the annual All-Ireland Blitz. In glorious sunshine, Down had two teams taking part. Both teams gave a fantastic account of themselves, with the A squad finishing runners-up in Division 2 group overcoming Offaly, Louth and Sligo before being pipped by a good Wexford side. It was great to see all these U14 girls bounce back so well from their Ulster Final defeat only a week ago. The future is certainly bright for Down Ladies’ football, based on the displays against All-Ireland opposition.
The craic and bonding developed between all 34 girls was fantastic to see and these young ladies are great ambassadors for their families and clubs. An added bonus for the girls was bumping into Tyrone senior All-Ireland winning manager, Mickey Harte on the way home, who willingly posed for a photo with the Down girls!
There will now be a medal presentation night on Friday 25th May in Downshire Arms, Hilltown for becoming Ulster runners-up to wrap a very successful season, measured very much by how well these girls have developed as competent and skilful footballers. Well done Enya, Katie and Caoimhe!
