Our U12 girls made the short journey yesterday morning to participate in St Mary’s, Burren, U12 LGFA Tournament. They played five matches in the group stages against Carryduff, Moortown, St John’s, Bryansford and Shane O’Neill’s qualifying to the tournament’s Plate Final.
Highlights of the group stages included Megan O’Neill’s excellent goal, Millie power Bagnell’s pin-point kick outs and Kate Mansfield’s score taking. Everyone really came to life in the quarter final against Blackrock with Orla McLean and Muirin Snedden excellent in the full back line and our new midfield pairing of Cliodhna Martin and Lauren Breen outstanding.
Our opponent in the Semi-Final was Dublin’s Na Fianna. The girls really stepped up to the plate with our forwards getting into gear in the first half. Sydney Barnett got some great scores. The second half was backs to the wall defending protecting our lead. Lillie McClorey continued her great performances with resolute defending.
The young Blues progressed to the Final against Glen but, unfortunately. it proved a step too far with our girls running out of steam and getting beaten by two points. Our super subs of Sarah Ivanov, Shaena McBurney and Anna Malone were an inspiration when called upon. Special praise also to our three U10 players, Aoibheann Ward, Caoimhe Sneddon and Lauran Caldwell who defied their age with super performances.
Speaking after the tournament, Paul McClorey, U12 Manager, commented, “This young team are excellent bunch of girls with a great attitude who have been a pleasure to coach all year. Thanks to Liz Power Bagnelle for her guidance and support today. Thanks also to Aine for her help all year. Thank you also to our hosts, Burren GAA, for a well-organised, friendly tournament.”
