On Wednesday 13th June the U12 girls had a tough match at home in St Mark’s in dreadful weather conditions. Orla-May McLean, playing up front for the first time, got Warrenpoint off to a strong start with a superb point after great team work from the forward line. With the winds on their backs for the first half, the young blues kept Annaclone under constant pressure going forward. The scores kept coming with Kate Mansfield, Muirin Sneddon and Sydney Barnett all getting their names on the score sheet. The girls went into the half-time break with a three-point lead despite some missed opportunities.
It was very much ‘backs-to-the-wall’ in the second half playing against a very strong wind and pelting rain. Our defence was outstanding with Megan O’Neill producing a superb block preventing an imminent score. Annaclone, with the elements aiding, managed to get back on level terms. The Warrenpoint girls showed great determination with Lauren Breen leading by example. She won a free and passed to her good friend, Emma Ryan, who stuck it over the bar. The game was effectively won when Cliodhna Martin hit a thunderbolt into the top corner of the visitor’s net. Further scores were added in the dying minutes to record a six-point lead victory.
Special mention to Iva-Sara Ivanov who played brilliantly when she came off the bench. A great all-round performance from everyone. Thanks to Annaclone and their management for a very sporting contest. Onwards and upwards – our next match is away to Rostrevor 20th June (meeting @ St Mark’s at 6.15pm).
