On a beautiful still and mild day for the time of year, Sunday saw the hurlers and footballers of Cumann Pheadair Naofa take to Moygannon for a joint challenge match Vs St Paul’s of Belfast. This was following on from the successful joint initiative between the U8 footballers and hurlers last October the U12’s decided to give it a go.
A panel of 29 enthusiastic St Paul’s kids made the trip from Belfast along the scenic shore road and on to the Moygannon pitch.
Both games were 20 minutes a half and played 11 aside, which gave St Peters and St Paul’s ample opportunities to rotate the teams and ensure everyone received plenty of games time.
Both hurling and football matches were played in a sporting manner and both sets of players exhibited high levels of skill which are the cornerstone of Gaelic games. Most pleasing about the hurling from a Warrenpoint point of view was the intensity of the tackling and striking at such an early stage in the year, whilst the movement and kick passing of the footballers was a joy to watch.
All in all the hurlers and footballers of the Point will have taken a great deal of learning from the games against a very accomplished St Paul’s side who played both matches with great skill and commitment.
Many thanks to St Paul’s for traveling down and all being well we will return the favour when the season gets fully up and running.
A final word of thanks must go to the number of dual players who participated in both matches.
