You could have heard a pin drop in a packed St Peter’s clubrooms on Saturday evening when the Kilkenny Legends returned from Newry to talk to the waiting crowds about all thing Hurling and GAA. MC for the evening Michael Keenan had some well thought out questions to put to the panel which consisted of; Legends manager Rackard Cody, and players Charlie Carter, Martin Carey, Michael Grace, John Mulhall and Sean Cummins. The panel spoke passionately about their love for hurling and more importantly their love for Kilkenny. Charlie Carter spoke emotionally about his post match rituals and of his love of hurling which stemmed from his late father. The younger players of the panel spoke highly and passionately about their current experiences and the pressure they felt at training, especially in the lead up to a big game when all the emphasis was on winning a place. They spoke about the high esteem in which they held current manager Brian Cody and his sheer dedication to Kilkenny. When asked by Michael why they felt Hurling in Kilkenny was so successful the panel said, “everyone has a hurl and a sliotar in their hands, no matter where you look, it’s in our blood.” John Mulhall, gave a fascinating account of the experience as a 19 year old of being involved in the preparation for an All-Ireland final. John also spoke eloquently about the prestige of the Game of legends event and how much he appreciated an opportunity to wear a Kilkenny jersey again and to play in a side that contained Charlie Carter and DJ Carey, two of his boyhood heroes.
