Pairc Liam Ui ir was the venue on Thursday past for the first ever Ladies Senior Football Championship game that the club have played in. A real sense of occasion hung in the air around the Warrenpoint pitch, the Senior Ladies had one goal and one goal only, play like they have never played before, give their all and come aware with a first ever championship win and begin planning for a Semi Final.
Their opponents were Mayobridge, whom 4 months earlier had been the visitors for the first ever home game in the Senior League, the result in that game after a Titanic battle was a well deserved draw but this Warrenpoint team have went through a tremendous change since then and the belief in the group is something that any team in Ireland would crave.
The game threw in and in the early stages it was evident both teams were going for this game, Mayobridge had the upper hand in the early exchanges but a strong Point defence were able to snuff out the early opportunities. The Point girls began to get to grips with the game and began to dominate the midfield battle, scores from Coaimhe Shannon, Ciara Morgan all seeing the point girls edge in front.
The first half was an all blue half, the Seasiders worked hard attack after attack, they defended like their lives depended on it. Ciara Morgan managed to find the net after a well worked play from their Own kickout and due to this they went I at half time 1-06 to 0-0 in front.
The second half saw a rejuvenated Mayobridge come out and this pushed the Warrenpoint ladies, scores from Coaimhe Shannon, Kate Kelly and Ciara morgan ensured the Warrenpoint side stayed in the lead. With 15 minutes to go Kate Kelly was unfortunate to sustain a broken arm in a freak incident but managed to kick a point in the seconds which followed, showing the sheer drive and motivation the Warrenpoint team had.
When the final whistle went there was a huge roar of joy from the home crowd, a huge victory for the young side and one which sees them continue their journey this season into the Semi Final next Saturday 18 August vs Dundrum in Clonduff at 5:00pm. Come out and support the team!
