Cumann Pheadair Naofa Senior men were handed a tough Glenn side for the second round of the Down SFC. Mayobridge GAC hosted the tie and a large crowd from the travelling fans of both teams set the stage for what was anticipated to be a great game.
The game began with Glenn taking advantage of a nervy Warrenpoint side who never really got out of second gear in the opening 10 minutes of play. John Boyle opened the scoring for the blues on 5 mins followed by a well executed point by Aaron joe Magee.
Glenn played like a division one side moving the ball well and attacking the Warrenpoint men on the break in style. Gary McMahon channelled his inner Rory beggan converting a well taken free and Ross McGarry added to this just after on 15 mins.
Miceal O’Hare kicked a terrific score but moments later had to be taken off due to injury leaving Alan Davidson to come in for him. The first half drew to a close it was level Pegging 0-05 to 0-05.
The second half started with Glenn taking the first two scores of the half but Ross managed to score from a free followed by alan davidson . The blues then seemed more focused and they began to open us a tiring Glenn side as the half went on.
Gary McMahon was again in form with a few great saves to deny the Glenn men. With time almost up and the game in stoppage time a free from 25 yards out bounced unopposed into the Warrenpoint goal, the blues having switched off now saw the game go to extra time.
Extra time seemed to be exactly what the Seasiders needed to spring them into life, and that’s exactly what they did with players all over the park began to be more creative and run at the Glenn men.
Highlight of the extra time period was a excellent goal taken by Ryan Magee. In the end the Warrenpoint men progressed into the quarter final with a final score of 1-16 to 1-12 and manager Niall McAleenan will take a lot from this game as they prepare for the next stages.
