Our senior footballers opened the All County Division One Football League on Easter Sunday with an away trip to Mayobridge. The game started with the home team opening the scoring with a point from play. However both teams kept their defence in check and put in some excel bent tackling to hold the score to only a point between them at half time.
McAleenan’s men came out in top form and a few tactical changes saw new & youthful legs open up the fast flowing game and Ross McGarry, key marksman for the point ticked off some excellently placed scores. Score of the match however came from a fantastic long ball played from Ryan Magee into big Grant who was right inside the box and able to palm the ball into the back of the net to put the blues ahead by 5 with only minutes remaining.
However the home team didn’t give up and they responded with a scrambled ball into the back of D’arcy’s net to leave it only a point in it with seconds left. The ‘point men handled the ball well, kept procession and eventually referee Neil Cousins blew full time to a hearty cheer from the travelling team and supporters. Final score Warrenpoint 1.09 Mayobridge 1.08.
Manager Niall McAleenan said he was delighted to come away with a win against a great traditional footballing team like Mayobridge. He said both teams were rusty in the outset and that all focus was now on Bryansford at home on Friday 5 April.
