Cumann Pheadair Naofa GAA Club were delighted and honoured to be the recipients of GAA medals won by Francie O’Neill (RIP), formerly of Mary Street, Warrenpoint, who resided in England for many years. Francie’s daughters, Bernie Hartley, Margaret Gospel and son-in- law Arthur Hartley, visited the Clubrooms recently where they met with Club President Barney Carr, Brian Connolly, recipient of the Club’s Hall of Fame award 2016, and Club Secretary Anne McCormack to present the medals.
Francie was a member of the famous 1953 Senior Football Championship team and the cherished memorabilia included Francie’s 1953 Senior Football Championship Medal and the 50th anniversary commemorative medal which was presented to Francie at the celebrations in 1993 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Senior Football Championship win.
On behalf of the club, Anne McCormack said that it was an honour to receive the medals and that they will be displayed in the clubrooms as part of the Club’s historical memorabilia. She expressed appreciation to Francie’s family for this very generous gesture. Speaking on behalf of the O’ Neill Family, Bernie Hartley said that her late father had fond memories of St. Peter’s GAA Club. She expressed appreciation to Brian Connolly and Barney Carr for sharing their detailed memories of bygone years in St. Peter’s GAA Club.
