Cumann Pheadair Naofa Footballers welcomed Mayobridge to Pairc Liam Ui Ir, on Friday night, a match that last year saw the Point men defeat the Bridge men but in the return fixture the Mayobridge team taught the young point team a lesson with a heavy defeat. This year has seen the Warrenpoint men grow in stature and having won the opening fixture against Bryansford the Point men had fallen to Kilcoo, Downpatrick and Castlewellan by narrow margins. Warrenpoint were out to set right the previous few games defeats and the game started as such.
Ross McGarry slotted over the first point of the game after 2 minutes and from then the Point men held possession across the pitch, until a handling error allowed the Bridge men to come back into it on 4 minutes. The patient build up play by the point men allowed Ryan Boyle to burst forward from defence and shrug off the Mayobridge defenders to score a blistering goal to see the Blues go 3 up.
Wides from Cumann Pheadair Naofa and a goal chance by Ryan Mallon could have seen the Point up by 7 at half time but the Point men took a 4 point lead with Ross McGarry converting scores in the 12th and 16th minute, Mayobridge fought back and the score at half time was all square 1-4 to 0-7.
The Second half saw the Point continue to impose their physical presence on the game, the only imperfection to their game on the night was small handling errors which would have seen them edge in front further. But Ross McGarry was on fire and pipped over any Scorable free that Mayobridge happened to concede in their attacking third.
The Point Defence was superb with Cormac and Sean Gallagher holding the fort at the back holding Mayobridge to only 2 points in the second half. Warrenpoint picked up 2 vital points against a fancied Bridge side and they will be confident going into next weeks game against Ballyholland in Ballyholland next friday
