Seventy primary school pupils from St. Dallan’s Primary School and Carrick Primary School enjoyed an afternoon of hurling and camogie at Milltown Playing Fields in glorious spring sunshine on Friday 7 April. The purpose of the youthful gathering, hosted by Cumann Pheadair Naofa , was to celebrate the arrival of new hurling equipment, including hurling sticks, helmets and portable goal posts which will be used by the Cumann Pheadair Naofa hurling coaches who provide after school coaching in St. Dallan’s Primary School and Carrick Primary School. There too to participate in the afternoon was County Hurler Danny Toner (Down GAA Hurling Games Development Officer) who enthused the primary school pupils about the ancient sport.

The £3,000 equipment was funded following a successful grant application, to Limavady Community Development Initiative (LCDI) Small Capital/Equipment Grants by Cumann Pheadair Naofa in association with St. Dallan’s PS and Carrick PS.

During the afternoon, the mini games were enjoyed by the children, culminating with the presentation of the equipment by Hurling Chairman Damien McConville to Mrs Una Farrell (Principal St. Dallan’s P.S) and Mrs Anne Cassidy (Principal Carrick P.S). In keeping with the Club’s Healthy Club Project, the children enjoyed a healthy snack of fruit and water.

On behalf of Cumann Pheadair Naofa, Anne McCormack (Club/School Liaison Officer) expressed appreciation to the hurling section, namely Chairman Damien McConville, Chris Rooney, Conor Keenan and Eugene McConville for their significant work in after school hurling coaching in St. Dallan’s and Carrick PS. She thanked Mrs Farrell, Mrs Cassidy and Mr Rice (GAA Coordinator St. Dallan’s PS) for their support for the project. Sincere thanks was expressed to LCDI for the grant assistance which will greatly enhance hurling/camogie opportunities in the Warrenpoint area.
