U12 Ladies Enjoy Tournament

Thanks to Clonduff LGFA for the fantastic morning of football on Sunday 22nd September at their annual U12 Tournament. Well done to our U12 girls in blue who made it all the way to the Shield Final narrowly defeated by the girls from Clann na Banna. Despite the loss, reaching the final stages of the Tournament was a great end to the girls’ U12 season.

U14 Ladies Make Championship Final

 Age Group: U14 Ladies

Date: 22nd September 2019 – 12:30pm

Teams: Cumann Pheadair Naofa vs Bredagh

Venue: Moygannon, Warrenpoint

Competition: C Championship semi-final

Following heavy overnight rain, this much anticipated semi-final was moved to Moygannon, as the pitch at Milltown was deemed unplayable. With different rules for Championship than league matches, the ladies from Warrenpoint knew that Bredagh were coming with a strong team, including a number of players from their ‘A’ squad.

The Blues started well & really took the match to the visitors, hassling & harrying them in all areas of the pitch. Bredagh were not given any time or space on the ball & this showed particularly in their shooting, which was well wide of the mark. The first score of the game was a point thanks to Sydney Barnett, following an excellent weaving run. Bredagh pressed hard but just could not find a reply, thanks in no small part to the defensive efforts of Aimee Kelly, Shannon Doyle & Keelia Mulligan, who were in no mood to be beaten. Some wayward shooting from both sides led to a long period without a score, the drought not broken until the 21st minute, when Erin Carr popped the ball over the bar. The Blues continued to press & got their rewards with another couple of points from Lillie McClorey & Cliodhna Martin. The defensive work from the home team was outstanding, preventing Bredagh from getting a single score on the board in the first half.

Nothing is decided at half time & Warrenpoint knew that another 30 minutes of lung busting effort was required, if they were to become the first Warrenpoint ladies’ team to reach a Championship final. Bredagh had obviously been on the receiving end of some strong words from their management team, as they came out strongly & collected their first point of the match, within a minute of the restart. It seemed that Bredagh were about to launch into a fightback, but were soon put on the back foot again, after a quick break was finished brilliantly by a thunderous goal from Cliodhna Martin. With the defensive forces of Warrenpoint standing firm, the attacks could continue & a flurry of unanswered scores from Athena Perdikomatas (goal & point), Erin Carr (goal) & Cliodhna Martin (point), put the Blues in a commanding position. Nothing could be taken for granted & defensive work still had to be done. Cara Bradley once again excelled in goal, tipping a fearsome shot over the bar & saving a certain goal. The half-back trio of Muirin Sneddon, Lauren Breen & Tara Heatley, kept the Bredagh runners well in check & gave the hard-working back line incredible backup. Bredagh finished the stronger in terms of scores, with a goal & two points, but the Blues stuck to their task, kept battling & saw the game out, running out winners by 3-6 to 1-3.
