With Martin Fogarty only having just left Warrenpoint on Friday evening, it was off to Downpatrick for the launch of the Hurling Development Pathway. This was an initiative started by our very own Senior Hurler Tom Daly who now sits on the county board in his role as the Down Hurling Development Officer.
The day was facilitated by two guest coaches, Paudie O’Neill, Chairman of the National Hurling Development Committee and Martin Fogarty, National Hurling Development Manager, two of Irelands leading figures in the promotion of Hurling Development.
Cumann Pheadaír Naofa had four coaches in attendance at a packed-out event, with coaches from every Hurling & Camogie Club in Down also attending. The day consisted of a presentation from Niall Coulter, who has over the years analysed the failings of Down Hurling teams at county and club level and as such put in place a plan that all clubs should follow in order to develop their players from U6 through to senior level.
In the afternoon Paudie O’Neill and Martin Fogarty took the sessions outdoors to demonstrate their philosophies on coaching with the county U14 & U16 Development squads. This was an extremely informative and success event and it’s hoped that Hurling in Warrenpoint and Down will once again see happier and more successful times.
