Cumann Pheadair Naofa Footballers were welcomed by Burren to St Marys Park, Burren on Thursday past, a match that for years has brought a rivalry that exists between the two, a rivalry like none other.

Both teams were eager to pick up the points having dropped points that both would have felt that they should have come away with, Burren snatched a draw against Mayobridge last week and the Warrenpoint men pulled off a great win against a much fancied Bryansford side. As usual a Huge crowd turned out for the match in what would be a fiercely competitive battle.

Warrenpoint took the first score of the game from a super John Boyle Shot which was moment later added to by a great run by the on form Aaron Darcy.

The Burren men had a chance to draw their first score from he game when they had a scoreable free from 25 yards out but was just wide. Burren then managed to get on the scoreboard when the popped over a point and was quickly followed by a great kick pass from Kevin Mckernan which opened the Point mens defence and saw them concede the first goal of the game. The Burren men edged over another  point from play and a lacklustre 10 mins from the Point men saw another Burren goal conceded.

The Point men had another few opportunities to get back into the game from frees but the balls just edged wide from the boot of Ross McGarry.

It took the on form Ruairi Cowan to knock the point men back into contention to bring the tally between the teams to 6 points, another point for Cowan was followed by the point mens number 15 Ross McGarry who thumped the ball into the back of the Burren mens net to leave the point men 2 point behind. Aaron Darcy and Ross McGarry equaled two Burren points to leave the half time score with only two between the teams.

The second half saw the Point men nick the first score of the half from Ross McGarry from a free.

Burren battled back with another score but the point men hit a point and an amazing goal from Connor Clarke saw the point men edge in front by 3 points, burren set their eyes intently on the point mens goal but a huge defensive effort saw the point mens 25 yard line impenetrable.

Burren managed to ping one score off but the point men managed to grab a late score to leave the point men the victors in what would become a historic victory as the first time the Point have taken point of the Burren men since 1977.

But more importantly the point men have claimed a massive victory in 2016 that will see them in a good position to fight for a strong end of season position if they can continue their recent fantastic view of form, but form that has come from sheer hard work and determination.
