Sunday saw Cumann Pheadair Naofa travel to Longstone in the second last game of the season. The sun was out and set the perfect scene for what was a vital game for both teams who were trying to avoid a potential relegation play off in two weeks.
The winner would remain safe with one game to go and so the stage was set for what would be a fiercely contested battle between the two, Longstone having pipped the Point men to the post by a point earlier in the season.
It was Longstone who pulled away into a 2 point lead but the Point men pushed in front when Ross McGarry was brought down and was awarded a Penalty. McGarry netted the ball with ease and the Point men began to dominate the small battles around the pitch.
The Point men at half time went in 5 points up but knew full well that the men from Longstone would not lie down as this match meant so much for both teams. Division one football guaranteed or the prospect of division 2. Who would come out tops?
As expected the Longstone men battled with a fierce intensity fighting for every ball.
Ryan Mallon kept the Point men’s spirits high finding The net.
The Point men went into the last 6 minutes of extra time a Point down and they fought tooth and nail to equalise from a tough angle that McGarry slotted over, the ball broke from the kick out in Longstones favour but Eoin Henry heroically turned the Ball over and offloaded to Ryan Magee and Donagh McAleenan secured the victory for the Warrenpoint men and secured division 1 football in 2017 for the Blues!
Next up for the Warrenpoint men is a home game against Saval in the final game of the season next Saturday at 3:00pm
