Cumann Pheadaír Naofa 4-18 Castlewellan 0-8
On Monday evening Cumann Pheadaír Naofa entertained Castlewellan at Páirc Liam Uí Ir, being favourites to win this league fixture, the blues didn’t disappoint as they got off to a dream start with James O’Hare and John O’Kane getting the opening two goals with less than six minutes gone. Castlewellan struggled with the speedy forwards of Antoin & Thomas Magill. At centre half forward Matthew Teague was causing endless problems for the visitors as he consistently fed Joker with scoring chances. Within fifteen minutes a high ball into the edge of the square saw joker fetch the sliotar and as he turned his man to head towards goal he was pulled down, Referee Damien Kearns awarded the penalty which joker drove to the back of the net, CPN were now comfortable ten point leaders. Warrenpoint were knocking over point after point as Conan O’Neill and Conor Keenan saw the home side stretch out the advantage, Castlewellan in return broke their silence with three points of their own.
The second half saw no letup of pressure on the Castlewellan goal with James O’Hare ensuring that the game was well beyond any Castlewellan second half come back when he neatly turned his marker and planted a low shot into the corner. Again, O’Hare followed up with a point as he tapped it over with ease. Although Warrenpoint were well in front, their cause was not helped with the dismissal of two players midway through the half. Castlewellan could have taken advantage of this had they enough time left on the clock, but some astute defending saw the home side run out the clock to ensure another two points and maintain the pressure on league leaders Ballela at the top.
