At 7:30pm this coming Wednesday night in the Abbey CBS will see the Cumann Pheadaír Naofa senior hurlers season finish in either glory or disappointment. For the outsider, not privy to the close-knit community of Warrenpoint hurling, you could be forgiven for thinking that these guys are just for filling an end of season fixture that has to be played out, but I can assure you that Gerry O’Neill and his faithful backroom team are working diligently to make sure that the Betsy Gray title will be residing in Mary Street for coming months.
Having being knocked out of the Junior championship at the hands of a talented Ballela side, who subsequently went on to win the county title, Cumann Pheadaír Naofa were entered into the Betsy Gray championship where they were to face local rivals Newry Shamrocks’. In an exciting and energetic game, it was the division 2 underdogs, Warrenpoint who triumphed and came out one-point victors on the day and in doing so achieved a famous and long overdue victory over their division 1 opposition.
For Cumann Pheadaír Naofa to attain silverware they will have to defeat a Carryduff side that had beaten a weakened Warrenpoint team once in the league this season, so depending on whether both sides are at full strength this is a game that even the most knowledgeable pundit could struggle to predict. But it is hoped that come Wednesday night after the game that the Betsy Gray cup will be the toast of Warrenpoint and the faithful supporters of Cumann Pheadaír Naofa hurling.
