After a long break away from activities, the U16 ladies in blue got their season underway with a warm-up game against Bredagh, at Milltown. Pre-lockdown, Breadgh were placed in section A, with Warrenpoint in section B, so a tough afternoon was in prospect.

The blues took the lead with a point from captain Katie Howlett, after some good early pressure. Breadgh soon got into the flow of the game & started to take control with a number of scores, including two goals, inside the first ten minutes. Warrenpoint stuck to their task & managed to pop over a few more points from Enya Quinn & Jennah Doyle, but it was Bredagh who were scoring more heavily, taking another couple of goals & a further points, to give them a healthy half-time lead.

A number of changes were made at half-time, to get girls playing time & those just joining the game were straight into it, as Warrenpoint launched a fight back. The first score of the second half came via an own goal from Bredagh, following good work from Erin Carr. This was followed soon after by a point from Orlaith Breen & then another goal thanks to a powerful shot from Cliodhna Martin. The pressure was starting to tell on Bredagh, with the blues enjoying more possession & more shots at the posts. A third goal for the home side was added by Orlaith Breen, after some powerful & evasive running at the visitor’s defence. The final 10 minutes were dominated by the home side, with points from Enya Quinn, Cliodhna Martin & Sydney Barnett, with Bredagh just getting a couple of points in response. The back seven for Warrenpoint continued to work incredibly hard, literally putting their bodies in the way, to prevent Bredagh from breaking through.

After putting in a storming second half, Warrenpoint came away as winners by a single point, against a very good Bredagh side. Final score 3-13 to 4-9, for Warrenpoint.
