This year’s charity hurling match was a fantastic end to the 2017 season for Cumann Pheadaír Naofa senior hurlers, with many stalwarts of the club coming from near & far to once more pull on the blue jersey. This was a game that mattered more than championship or league and was one to touch all of our hearts. Lindsay Rice, the wife of former senior committee member and senior hurler, Liam has had a rough and expensive road of treatment in Russia and is hopefully on the road to recovery. Once more the members of Cumann Pheadaír Naofa showed their true club spirit and support for the wider Warrenpoint community in their time of need for a family member, with all funds raised going to help Liam & Lindsay Rice.
An over thirty vs under thirty hurling match was the main feature of the evening at Páirc Liam Uí Ir, followed by a social event in the clubrooms afterwards. The standard of hurling on view could be classed as debatable with many of the over thirties taking to the field for the first time in ten or more years. Never the less it was the over thirties, with a little help from two/three county players that helped edge the bragging rights over the current crop of club representatives, until next year at least.
The game drew in players from Louth, Donegal and even the Ards peninsula as club colleagues and adversaries threw their animosities to one side for a worthy cause in what was a truly an enjoyable and fulfilled successful evening.
Without mentioning the exploits on the field under floodlights everyone was looking forward to a great night of renewing old and new friendships on and off the field. The evening was rounded off by a raffle and great night of entertainment in the clubrooms. Many thanks must go to the players and club members who travelled long distances to and to all those who helped make the night such a great success.
