Convincing Win For Minors
Our Minor Footballers were in action at home last week, against Eire Og, an amalgamation of Ballymartin and Glasdrumman. Eire Og were sitting third in the league heading into this fixture and the home management and players expected a testing encounter. Warrenpoint were missing six players and a mentor through county commitments, illness, injury or marriage! This, along with the assumption that Eire Og would field Fifteen players, necessitated calling up some U16 players (and a mentor), for the first time in a competitive match this year.
As it transpired Eire Og were also under strength for this fixture and the game would be played Thirteen a-side.
From the throw-in Eire Og moved the ball well and mounted the first of several early attacks and they were unfortunate not to register scores, this was due to a combination of their poor finishing and good goal keeping from Sean Carragher.
Eire Ogs early attacks did not unduly unsettle the young blues and they began to play to their own strengths, with the ball being moved fast into the ever-alert forwards. The score board began to reflect the emerging dominance of the home team and the sizeable support was treated to some fine scores.
Half time could not come soon enough for the away team as at this stage it seemed they could do nothing right and the blues were dominating in almost every area of the pitch. The home management made two changes at half time, bringing on Pierce Daly and Jack Daly.
Warrenpoint carried on much as before in the second half and continued to notch up the scores, in fairness Eire Og kept trying but they became increasingly frustrated with their inability to turn possession into scores. However at least two or three of the Eire Og players stood out as being very, very good and as a team they never stopped trying.
With the game entering the final ten minutes Warrenpoint “cleared the bench” giving a run out to the U16s, who no doubt will play an important part in the Minor set up as the year progresses. The game finished 7.12 to 0.08, next up in the League, after the exam break, on the 18th of June, is an away match to Saval. Which is the first of our last 3 matches of this stage of the league, the matches all against teams presently in the top half of the table.
U12 Footballers Put On Skillful Display
U12 Footballers in hard fought encounter with Attical.
Our U12 footballers welcomed Attical to Milltown on Sunday morning in what was a thoroughly entertaining game played with great skill and spirit by both sides.
The visitors started well and registered the first 2 points of the game. After a slow start, the young blues drew level with 2 points of their own. Throughout the remainder of the first half both sides exchanged point for point. Some wasteful shooting by the young blues in the first half contributed to the game being 8 points to 7 in favour of Attical at half-time.
The second half saw the visitors start well again with 2 quick fire goals giving Attical a big cushion. The Warrenpoint boys continued to play some good football out the field but failed to convert several good goal chances upfront. The game ended 6 :10 to 1 :12 in favour of Attical. The management team were delighted with the application of the Warrenpoint lads and emphasised to the young blues the importance of taking their chances when they come along. This ultimately was the difference in 2 well matched sides at the final whistle.
