Minor Footballers Win By One Away From Home
Our Minor Footballers were away again last week, facing Annaclone in a top of the table clash in the South Down League. Played on a heavy pitch, after a day of rain, both teams played a similar style of attacking, let the ball do the work, football.
In the first half Annaclone were the hungrier team, first to the ball and more accurate in front of goal. Warrenpoint struggled to get out of the blocks and were fortunate to be only trailing by four points at half time.
After several positional changes and an opportunity to reflect on their poor first half performance, the young blues approached the second half in a much more determined fashion
The four-point deficit was quickly made up with a goal almost direct from the throw in and a point from the subsequent kick out. However, Annaclone would not surrender their lead easily and in the next passage of play they raised the green flag themselves.
This was proving to be a very good game between two equally matched sides, with scores being traded for the next twenty minutes – much to the appreciation of the large number of spectators in attendance.
The closing five minutes were played at a frenetic pace with scores being traded and strong challenges going in from both sides. At the final whistle both sets of players gathered around the referee awaiting official confirmation of the score – as neither team was sure if it was a draw or if they had won. After consulting his notebook, the ref declared a final score of Annaclone 3.14 Warrenpoint 5.09, a one-point win for the very relieved young blues.
Next up for the Minors is a home match, this time against Eire Og, an amalgamation of Ballymartin and Glassdrumman.
U16 Top Of Table Clash
On Thursday night , it was the turn of Mayobridge to visit Milltown to what proved to be a top of the table clash and an absolute brilliant display from both teams. Once again the young Point team got off to a flying start racking up 1-2 unanswered in the first 10 mins . After that the Bridge side settled down and slowly moved into their planned system and came right back in it with some great points . It was only for some outstanding goal keeping from Niall Howlett and brave defending from Ben Lynch and Kealan Freer, the Bridge could have overtaken the lead more but still managed to find themselves a point ahead at half time .
The second half proved to be a repeat of the first half , the young Blues went into a 6 point lead after a great taken goal from Daragh Ruane and some outstanding shooting from Connor Madden . But the Bridge side weren’t beaten yet and clawed and scrapped their way back into it . A penalty with 10mins to go was awarded to the Bridge which was well taken and sent them into a late lead which they didn’t lose the rest of the game . Final score was 3-10 to 4-10 .
Although we were beaten in this very good game our performance was well improved from the last game . There was some brilliant individual performances right throughout the field on both sides and the likes of Jamie Powell , Jack Howlett , David Breen stuck out for the home side .
Next up is a journey to the Kingdom on Thursday 9th May.
