Congratulations to our U16 Ladies team, ‘Droichead Pointe,’ who won the LGFA U16 B Championship title on Saturday 13th October in St Patrick’s Park, Newcastle, adding the Championship victory to their recently acquired U16 B League title. Played in heavy rain, our young girls in blue braved the elements and dug deep against a strong, relentless Saval side. Half time saw only 2 points separate both teams (Droichead Pointe 0-08 / Saval 1-03).
The second half provided nail-biting viewing for the huge crowd of supporters as the game hung in the balance while both teams laid everything on the line in pursuit of victory. Slowly edging in front with outstanding performances across the field from our goalkeeper to forward line, our young blues’ determination and skill shone through and saw them emerge victorious at the final whistle 3-10 to Saval’s 3-05. Delighted joint captains, Caoimhe Shannon and Mollie Smyth, accepted the Championship trophy on behalf of the team from LGFA County Fixtures Secretary, Francis Rogan.
Winning the U16 League and Championship is a fitting tribute to everyone who worked tirelessly to ensure that this amalgamation would be a successful experience for all concerned. Life-long friendships and bonds have been formed as well as memories to last a lifetime – all that is good about the GAA.
To win both League and Championship has truly been a remarkable achievement. Sincere thanks to the U16 management team and all the girls who were part of our journey, as well as the executive of both Cumann Pheadair Naofa and Mayobridge GAC for all the help and support throughout the year ensuring our partnership was a successful one.
