The U14 ladies from Warrenpoint welcomed Castlewellan to Milltown, on a very warm Sunday afternoon (5th August) and were looking for an improved performance from the last time the two sides met.
Both teams started well and got early points on the board. Castlewellan had most of the attacking play, however, some excellent defensive work from the home team and a fine goalkeeping display from Cara Bradley, saw the scores kept to a minimum. Half time saw only a point separating the teams and the young Blues were feeling good about their performance so far but knew that there was plenty more hard work to be done.
As the second half progressed, Castlewellan started to assert some control on the game and managed to score regularly. The Blues stuck to their task admirably and continued to fight hard, with the back seven having to work particularly hard. Warrenpoint were missing seven players for the match and with Castlewellan bringing a large squad and able to send on fresh players regularly, the match started to get away from the Blues. By the end of the match, many of the Blues were out on their feet, after the effort they’d put in. Castlewellan eventually ran out winners by 4-20 to 1-9. Despite the score line, this was a much-improved performance from the last time the sides met and the Warrenpoint ladies can be very proud of their efforts.
