Our U16 Ladies returned to football this week after a long exam and holiday break travelling to play hosts Dundrum on Saturday 28th July. Dundrum are no strangers to competitive games, with the Driochead Pointe Ladies narrowly defeating the side in the first round of the U16 League by only 1 point, and this second encounter did not disappoint!
The journey to Dundrum was long and gruelling for the girls, facing two road closures due to flooding caused by atrocious weather conditions. The game itself was played in torrential rain coupled with high winds beating off the near Dundrum shoreline onto the pitch.
Losing the toss and playing against this very strong, high wind the Droichead Pointe Ladies had to work very hard to fend off the Dundrum onslaught in the first half. With excellent goal-keeping and a strong defence, the Blues managed to keep the score difference to only 2 points going into half time.
Despite their best efforts and having the strong wind advantage, the rainfall intensified in the second half keeping visibility to a minimum while Dundrum secured a further goal and point unanswered. True to form, the girls in Blue rose to the occasion and kept battling forward, determined to show that the game was far from over. Their efforts, fitness and determination were well rewarded as Dundrum came under serious pressure from the Blue’s mid-field and forward attack in the last 15 minutes of the game. Despite Dundrum’s untiring and relentless efforts, the Droichead Pointe Ladies were delighted to run out eventual winners with a convincing 6-3 to 2-6 victory.
The next League game for our U16 Ladies will see us travel to Mayobridge to play a strong Saval side on Wednesday 1st August – all support would be greatly appreciated.
