Our U12 Ladies were back on the road again last Wednesday evening (20th June) with an away game against Rostrevor. From their previous encounter with this side, the girls fully realised that they faced a tough challenge. Playing against a strong breeze in the first half, it was backs against the wall once again. Our defence stood firm with Millie Power-Bagnelle pulling off three outstanding saves and Lillie McClorey blocking sure-shots several times. We did break out of defence quite a few times but our shooting in front of goal wasn’t accurate. Unfortunately, we went in at half-time trailing 1-02 to no score.
The girls in blue started the second half in a more determined mood but the scores still didn’t come as Rostrevor pegged on another point to lead by 6 points. Undeterred, the girls fought on with superb defending and some great team moves up the field searching for scores. Eventually, the deadlock was broken with a side line ball dropped into the square by Kate Mansfield which ended up in the back of the net. Buoyed up by this and with spirits high the girls doubled their efforts all over the pitch.
Kate came up trumps once again when she hit the net with a long range shot. After this, both teams had a couple of chances to get a winner but none materialised. In the end, a draw was a fair result in what was a very sporting contest. A massive improvement from our first outing against Rostrevor! The whole team was outstanding with Lillie, Millie and Kate providing critical contributions. Thanks also to Rostrevor players and management for a great evening. Next up for our U12 Ladies is a home fixture vs Bosco next Wednesday evening (27th June) @ 7pm in St Mark’s.
