The format this year at U16 is comprised of 4 sections with the top 2 teams in each section going on to play in an All County League.
The other teams in Section 1 along with Cumann Pheadair Naofa are Saval, Shamrocks, Ballyholland, An Riocht and Clann na Banna.
On a bright Spring evening the U16 footballers commenced their league campaign with a match in Pairc Liam Ui Ir against Saval.
Coming on the back of two good challenge games the previous week the young blues were hopeful of putting in a performance that would reflect all the hard work done pre-season.
Warrenpoint scored first with a well worked point from play, this lead was built upon quickly with a fantastic goal, finished to the net by Lorcan Ruane. But Saval regrouped and got a point and then raised the green flag with a goal of their own. Only 1 more score was taken in the first half, a point for Saval, leaving the half time score at 1.02 to 1.01 in favour of Saval.
Saval started the second half strongly, scoring the next two points to go into a 3points lead, however the ‘point boys didn’t lose heart and when they began to run at their opponents and improved their accuracy the score board began to reflect their improved efforts.
Both teams provided great entertainment in the second half, which seen Warrenpoint add 2 goals and 9 points to Savals 1 goal and 8 points. Warrenpoints goals coming from Robert Barnett and Cain McLoughlin
The large support recognised the great effort put in by the boys, greeting them with warm applause as they left the field. Final score Cumann Pheadair Naofa 3.10, Saval 2.10. Next up is an away match to Clann na Banna on Thursday 5th of April at 6.30pm.
