Cumann Pheadair Naofa 0-10 vs Burren 1-05
Cumann Pheadair Naofa Footballers were back in action again this past Friday against fierce rivals and neighbours, Burren.
Both teams have had different seasons in the ACFL Division one, Burren have lost a few games many would have expected them to win and are sitting mid table with a few games remaining, while the Point men have picked themselves up and went on an unbeaten streak which sees them sitting joint second going into the final few fixtures sitting only 3 points behind Castlewellan. Burren were defeated last year in Burren by the point men and it had been a long many a day since a Warrenpoint team last beat Burren in Pairc Liam Ui Ir so there was a lot to play for.
The game got off to a great start from the Blues with Aaron Joe Magee pointing for the Blues, the weakened Burren team looked fairly rattled with the Point men playing a fast moving running and kicking game but the Burren men had no answer for the Blues, reverting to a ultra defensive game plan which saw 12-13 men behind the ball at times. After a forgettable first half the men from Warrenpoint were 3 points to the good with the Score 0-02 to 0-05.
The second half unfortunately did not change too much in terms of the game plan from the Burren men, a momentary lapse in concentration saw the Burren men snatch a goal to put them a point up with 9 minutes go to, however the Cumann Pheadair Naofa men stood strong and their resilience kicked into gear and they held off for a fantastic win against bitter rivals Burren.
The way they won may not have been pretty due to how the Burren men were set up but a win is a win and in this game it was important as it now leaves the point men 1 point of top spot, a fantastic achievement for the Blues with so much to play for in the next few weeks.
Next up for Cumann Pheadair Naofa is RGU Downpatrick on Wednesday night at 7:30pm at home.
