Cumann Pheadaír Naofa claimed their first hurling title of 2016, when the U16 hurlers defeated a battling O’Rahillys side on a score line of 4-7 to 3-9. The happiest man in Warrenpoint tonight is undoubtedly captain, Peter McCreesh who took the U16 Championship shield from County Board representative Liam Quinn, having pulled off a fine save and clearance in the dying minutes.
The game was frenetic and played at a high intensive pace, in warm sunshine at Ballela on a pitch that had been beautifully prepared for the day. When the game looked to be slipping away, it was Nathan Foy who won the sliotar at midfield and having been fouled he delivered the resultant free into the square. Tiernan Murphy won the ball from a crowd and when he was fouled, up stepped Ronan Cunningham to convert the resulting penalty. The final whistle came a few minutes later, with the minimum separating the two teams who gave a very committed performance. Final score Cumann Pheadaír Naofa 4-7 V O’Rahillys 3-9.
Congratulations to Manager Adrian McNally and his team who have worked diligently throughout the year with this bunch of talented lads.
