Cumann Pheadaír Naofa 8-8
Kilclief 0-0
On a damp heavy Milltown pitch, Warrenpoint and Kilclief played out an entertaining game. The game was only a minute old when influential midfielder Eoin Cassidy started to mark his stamp on the game, he collected a high ball in the middle of the field and took off towards goal unleashing a rocket to the back of the Kilclief net. Along with Niall Somerville and Liam O’Connor in the full forward line, the boys in Blue started to move the ball well and constantly caused problems for the young Kilclief defence.
The ever present Jason Young was in nets again and was able to deal with all that came at him, as he kept a clean sheet within terrible conditions. In defence Jack Houlahan, James Murray, James Russell and Sean Morgan all fought and harried for every sliotar and made life difficult for the Kilclief attackers. Tiarnan Tinnelly helped Man of the match Eoin Cassidy in the middle of the park to control the game. Up front Zac Mackarel and Oisin Kelly helped put a few score on the board as the Point men took a hold of this game.
At half time the introduction of Matthew Duffy and James Sweeney helped rejuvenate the tired and heavy legs Jack Houlahan moved to full forward to provide a deadly partnership with Niall Somerville, between them getting 5 scores in the second half alone.
This was a great performance by Warrenpoint in very challenging conditions and much credit to a young Kilclief team who showed great spirit and fight. Warrenpoint will need to continue with this fine form next week as they meet league favourites and neighbours Newry Shamrocks. Training continues on Tuesday evening from 6 to 7 so attendance is crucial.
